Every month, I get an energy bill without being able to attribute that cost to different appliances I have at home. I wanted to build an intuition for how much electricity each appliance in my home consumes.

I purchased a power meter ($10) and measured a range of everyday appliances. Here are the results:

Based on this data, my takeways are:

  • Devices that convert electricity into heat are by far the biggest power consumers.
  • Some devices (TV, Monitor, Apple TV, Air Cleaner, Airfryer, Washing Machine, Coffee Machine) draw power even when they appear to be turned off. Cutting standby power at night with smart plugs can result in savings.
  • Iron clothes in one session to avoid repeated reheating.
  • Prefer cold wash programs on the washing machine whenever possible.
  • When leaving home for an extended period, unplug devices or switch off the circuit breaker.

There were some devices directly connected to power or difficult to measure like boiler, kitchen lights, ceiling lights, oven and fridge.

Even without measuring every device, this exercise gave me a strong intuition for power consumption of different devices and gave me ideas on how to reduce my electricity bill.
